Summer lovin’ reading is a blast

Well everyone its finally SUMMER!!! To those who graduated congratulations and to those that didn’t I know you needed the break to get back to your non-stressed self. For me the summer is a time to take extra classes and read up on things that I know I will be in pursuit of next semester and also some fun reads.

I will be teaching myself more about sketchup this summer so I got the book Google sketchup for dummies which actually has really helped thus far. But some of the fun books I have read so far that I highly recommend are..

1.Animal Farm by George Orwell which Is definitely an illuminating fable that ill change your views on animals and how they are treated.

2.Suffer the children by Craig Dilouie it was called ” a wild and edgy apocalyptic thrill ride” this is one book I highly recommend I’m usually not into books about ” the end of the world” but I couldn’t stop reading from the second I picked it up. I finished it in a few hours and its over 400 pages.

3.Hallow City by Riggs which is actually a sequel to miss peregrines peculiar children. I loved the first book, as we all know second books aren’t always the greatest but I felt otherwise with this book. I loved it more then the first and I cant wait till the movie comes out.

4. Last but not least black moon by Kenneth Calhoun  I just started reading it and its doing a pretty good job of drawing me into it thus far. It’s full or emotion and a great  out look of what could actually happen to our society.

What books are you reading this summer? Any good beach books I should know about?

Weekend trip

jn'Hey everyone so most of you are packing up getting ready to go back home while others are gearing up for the hot summer in NYC. While there is a ton to do in the city every single day you might want to venture out. As some of you know I live in New Jersey and maybe 15 minutes from the shore ( so I am always there) but it’s a great place to get away for the weekend or just for the day. To get there and back on the train it will cost only $35! Isnt that crazy? Then you could bring whatever money you want for food, ect. You just go to Penn station the NJ transit area and take the long branch train, it goes to almost every beach along my area. You can decide how which one you would like to go to but I would say go to Long Branch. It is only a few short blocks away from the train station and it has a boardwalk with shops and food and entertainment, It is beautiful. We actually went on Sunday for mother’s day, they have finally cleaned up everything from Sandy it was such a beautiful day. If you go you have to get the gelato there, there is only one place that sells it! Best thing you will ever taste I promise!

kkThats the gelato, So good I can’t wait to get more!

hbSome people were already in the water but I thought it was still a little chilly for that!

nbjIt was such a nice afternoon, walking on the beach, shopping, and laying in the sun for a few hours. If you have time this summer I would highly suggest it!

Where is your favorite place to get away?

XOXO

This semester flew by!

WOW! It is almost the end of the semester for everyone. Between the long cold winter all the snow days and the long projects it honestly felt like summer was never going to be here.

I had some amazing field trips this semester. Some which included IGUZZNI, which is a lighting show room and manufacturer. We also went to steelcase ( the place i plan on working at one day ), the LEDUCATION expo. The NY times building and so many more, FIT really helps get you out to see the city and see all these places you never would have known existed. sd

This is the LEDUCATION expo where we got to meet vendors, and people we will be working with in the future.

Here is two of my classmates annie and hannah at steelcase. They gave us all kinds of refreshments and let us take as many pictures as we wanted.

This next one is the demo we got at IGUZZINI, which was absolutely amazing.

htf

I also was able to spend a lot more time focusing on my studies this semester, I think im getting better at my time management skills. My favorite class by far was my methods and materials class with Carmita Sanchez Fong ( You might remember her from admitted students day or from the post i wrote about her a while back).

gvferThen lastly some of my projects I felt like I put my heart and soul into every project ive completed but these I know I worked extra hard on.

asdThis was my first project of the semester and also the one where i cut the tip of my finger off with an exacto knife because i was rushing ( not a good idea) So please if you are doing something in a hurry or just using one be careful!

finalAnd this was my final 3rd semester project!! With my group Annie Kate and Ani we pulled together an awesome project, we had some troubles printing along the way but other than that I was very proud of how it turned out!

I cant believe this semester is over already, it makes me tear up because even with all the set backs this was one of my favorite semesters. It pushed me to my limits but also showed my i am unbreakable, and I can achieve whatever I put my mind to.

What was your favorite memory this semester? I’ll post a few next week, so comment pictures , stories whatever you would like!

XoXO Good Luck with Finals everyone

Lunch for Less

Hey everyone! the semester is coming to an end which means you most likely don’t have any money. Lots if projects and printing that needs priority over food. ( Not really but your probably going to chose your projects).

There are a few places right near school that you can get lunch for under 11 dollars, with a drink and everything!

sd

The first place is GiGi’s Monday’s they have discounts for students that have there WEAR IT MONDAY bracelets on. They also have daily deals with lunch for much less.

200px-Chipotle_Mexican_Grill_logo_svgMy absolute favorite place to eat  you can usually get a drink and a dish for 10.50 ( which considering how much food you get its a bargain!) I get a chicken bowl and a small drink probably every Monday because that’s one of my long days. 543px-Whole_Foods_Market_logo_svg

Lastly there is whole foods located just a few blocks from school at 250 7th Ave, New York, NY 10001. They have a buffet every single day with different foods. They also have fresh sushi, sandwiches, soup, dessert and more. When going to the buffet be sure to pick up the lighter things, heavier means it costs more. You can usually get a box of food, a drink , and a little desert for under 10 dollar’s!

I know there are also a lot of places around school that have dollar pizza and other deals like that . When I look for good deals it’s about getting more food for less, because I would rather only eat once and have snacks then eat and have to eat three more times because I am still hungry . More places are being added to WEAR IT MONDAY every week so make sure you take a look at the weekly student success letter and get your bracelet!

xoxo,

Kailee

NY Times and FIT

untitled

Did you know that the NY times that is provided for you in the lobby is paid for by FIT? FIT buys a certain number of copies everyday for the students to use. Did you ever realize that those copies are gone by I would say 8:30 at the latest? Well as students we can request more copies! All you have to do is write to the president of our school and the more people who request it the better!

Also did you know with those copies at school you can get an online copy as well? Free 247 hour access each day. The directions on how to access that is above each of the copy racks located all around school. There is one in the D-building right before the elevators.

My Methods and materials class ( third semester interior design course) just went on a trip to see this building and it was beautiful in every aspect. The building was designed by Pritzker Prize–winning architect Renzo Piano in association with FXFOWLE Architects. They had an incredible use of new technology. An advanced dispatch elevator system that uses 24 passenger elevators (32 elevators total, including service) for faster, more efficient service. The passenger indicates on the touchpad in the elevator lobby to which floor he wishes to go. The elevator system directs the passenger to a particular elevator, which picks up the passenger and drops him off on the correct floor. ( that was the coolest thing by far)! They also had Wi-Fi throughout the building to make sure employees were constantly working. ( Talk about a job that encourages you hah)saThis Picture is of the cafeteria – you weren’t aloud to take pictures inside so all of these are from Google

The NY times building is completely sustainable and the first of its kind. After seeing that building I think the interior design students would agree that we could seriously upgrade FIT to a completely sustainable building if we had the funding. ( IT WOULD BE A LOT of money). Overall it was a great experience and if you ever know any classes that are going I would highly recommend it! My Professor was more then happy to bring along extra students!

sds

These were the stairs going to all the different journalist areas. This area was a lot more quiet then I thought it would be. I guess when I think of this area in a building I think of an old movie I saw it in with people screaming out ideas and such. wsaLastly this is the living moss garden in the middle of the building, located on the reception floor, a beautiful detail added in. You can see this from almost every angle of the building.

Kailee

Plan the Perfect Semester

Anything you say or do may be used against you in a court of law.

If questioned twice, I will deny this post ever existed (something along the lines of identity theft). Bearing that in mind I will proceed to share my secrets with you (hahaha).

Ciao incoming students,

As you plan out your first semester (and swear you are about to die, so stressed out) there are some things that have come in handy through the years when it comes to registering and choosing classes.

  1. You will be assigned a faculty adviser according to your last name, you can and you should email this person as soon as you receive the email. Later on, you will find out that you like a certain teacher better and you can request to change :). I got snowed in during my first week, so I had to assign myself my own adviser which turned out to be wonderful, because I chose someone who fit (no pun intended, well maybe a bit) me.
  2. Search for your curriculum at the FIT website. Home –> Academics–> Undergraduate Programs–> Fashion Merchandising Management–> Curriculum. This will help you have an idea of what the next two years of your life will look like. Minimum credits for a full-time student: 12, max credits per semester: 21.Screen Shot 2014-04-10 at 6.18.17 PM
  3. Who doesn’t like ending the semester as early as possible to enjoy Xmas back with the family or just to explore NYC better (you nodding your head, pay attention NOW, will not regret)? As much as I love FIT, I am a metal to a magnet, I can feel the stronger pull to return back home early (long distance relationship, love of my life, target acquired) so I plan things to end early December. How? Well, (refer to the top quote haha) you look up the semester calendar. Look at what day is the last day, this fall the classes to end up the latest are Friday (sometimes can be Monday) classes, which means I plan my whole semester around NOT taking Friday classes (perks: long weekends, every weekend). Semester Calendar fall 2014
  4. Log in to MyFIT before your assigned date and time and look up at courses (use class search), days, time slots, availability and professor if noted (ratemyprofessor them). Create two mock schedules by u in excel and write down the CRN (course reference number, duh right :P ), this will make registering a one minute deal. You will log in, click on student tab, under online resources click Registration, choose semester, copy paste your CRN’s and done.Screen Shot 2014-04-10 at 6.29.54 PM
  5. Check out what your major has to offer, I know International Trade & Marketing offers advisement tracks, where they suggest what courses you should take, depending on what your dream job is. Don’t be afraid to click around the website, or Google what you want to do after graduation (I know it seems far out and away, but better not let it take you by surprise).Screen Shot 2014-04-10 at 6.33.59 PM
  6. Make an appointment with our (well now yours too, CONGRATS) Academic Advisement Center, they are happy to meet with you in person, online, or via telephone (convenient, yes!). They want to make your “academic experience as smooth and rewarding as possible” if that is not enough for you, at their front desk there is always free candy (no questions or comments just ransack the bowl haha).

Welcome to the beginning of an amazing chapter in your life! You will not regret this decision, so many doors will be opened for you that you will look back in hindsight and laugh at yourself ever even considering other options. Below, a peek into your great future: Greatness joke

Carpe Diem,

Sadie

As a freshman…

As a freshman there were a few things I wish someone had told me or that I remembered to do. Everyone has different experiences and we can’t compare one to another but my tips might help you  not make the mistakes I did, and as we all know knowledge is a form of growth.

untitled#1. Don’t forget to call your parents! No matter if you’re a commuter student or a student who will be dorming, don’t forget to check in. Your parents are going to worry A LOT, so it helps to give them a call or face time with them to make them still feel needed. Plus, if you stay on their good side they might be a tad bit more willing to help you out with financial matters. “MOM, I need new shoes mine broke, or MOM, I don’t have money for food this week!”

untitled

#2. Dont get into a relationship right away. This can work for some people, but often it doesn’t. the same goes for the typical highschool relationship, give yourself time to meet new people. You see this hot guy in class and he might seem like he’s the perfect one… until you get to know him and he has no idea what the word intelligence means. Also if you settle down right away you might miss out on a lot of opportunities because your to wrapped up in your new love life. College is about meeting new people and finding out who you are as a person, not about finding the love of your life.

fds

#3. Sign up for everything. In the question sessions we had over the past couple weekends this question came up a lot. ” What should I sign up for my first week or the first year?”. The answer to that is what don’t you want to sign up for? You want to make new friends and find people who are interested in the same things that you are. Plus it keeps you busy so you don’t gain that freshman 15 everyone’s worried about.

sdfs

#4. This isn’t Highschool anymore. Since you don’t have parents at your side anymore, there is no one to tell you to get your work done or to study for your tests. At FIT your life revolves around time management. Everything that is assigned can be done in that time period as long as you work on it when you are supposed to. Friends are important to make but school work always comes first. The last thing you want is to fail out of school or fail one of your classes. STAY FOCUSED.

Freshman year is a huge adjustment period but I made it through and so did millions of other people, you will be fine!

Question Time

Hi guys! Durning junior day I got a lot of great feed back from everyone! One of the major questions that applies to all majors is what kind of supplies will you need, when will you get theses lists, how much will it cost? ect. For Art and Design major the answer is, it’s most likely going to be costly at first especially if you don’t have any supplies for your major, if you have some things it wont be too bad.

For Interior Design I did need a lot because I started from scratch. For my graduation present my sister-in-law and brother bought me as much as they could. I received a drafting table, a t-square, drafting pencils, scales, erasers, templates, a box to put it all in, and so much more. Some important things that I can say will always come in handy is a drafting board (two if you’re a commuter student), a T-square( one wood, one metal), Drafting supplies (such as pencils, sharpeners, erasers, ect).

Another question was MAC or PC , personally I would suggest getting a PC with a great graphics card, a lot of memory and also invest in an external hardrive along with a few USBs. MAC is great but FIT teaches you everything on PC so if your willing to teach yourself programs like CAD and REVIT on MAC be my guest, but your going to have more trouble then the other people in your class.

DO NOT buy books new! For your liberal arts courses I would suggest renting them or getting them as E books. For your main interior design classes I would suggest buying them used or the more major ones new. The books for your interior design courses will be used throughout all your years in this program, so it is a good investment.

Keep in mind these helpful hints are for interior design students so what I mentioned about PC and MAC may not apply to you!

Kailee

Beautiful Travels

Hey everyone so my project that I am currently working on is a group project. We have to design a floor for an art magazine in a building, so I have been doing a little research about different museums . It’s amazing to see how they are designed architecturally, graphically, ect. But some of the pictures are just to beautiful not to show everyone. These are definitely places I would like to visit and maybe once you see them you will too. 4f78b6614b81ac387108e29008013f67This first one is  called the “Underwater Museum”  in Cancun, Mexico. More than 400 life-sized sculptures are made from neutral clay in order to promote the growth of coral reef and marine life. You actually swim through it, As soon as I saw this I texted my best friend and said “UM CAN WE GO?!” So guess where I am going this summer…Cancun here I come!

7aab9ae8e40ef86869183c42dae4169e This is called the “Chihuly Garden and Glass Museum” and it is  in Seattle. There are thousands of beautiful glass flowers all over the place. As I kept looking through the pictures I found one of it glowing at night, it was simply the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. My brother is going to Seattle to visit our cousin in July, I might just have to tag along now ( THANKS GABE in advance if you are reading this ).

45435bb024c55f8678b1b2167d977cb4This is in the London transport museum, the architectural details are just beyond beautiful. Imagine if New York subways, bus stations, and train stations had beautiful work like this? I know I would never want to leave, instead of the fast pace walk I do now.

Theres hundreds more that I found but I only chose my top three to show you. If you want to see more I found a lot on this website: http://www.travelandleisure.com/articles/worlds-most-beautiful-buildings

Let me know what you think, any suggestions where else I should vacation?
