Thanksgiving Travel Tips

While Thanksgiving is still a few short weeks away, it’s never too early to plan for your travels.  I won’t be able to spend this Thanksgiving with my family back home but I’m fortunate enough to have one of my friend’s welcome me into their home each Thanksgiving.  Even though I do not have to travel very far to get to my friend’s home, we are among the masses traveling after the workday is over.  Here are some of my tips and tricks to travel smoothly and safely:

  • Buy your tickets in advance:  This may be self explanatory but buying your ticket right before you get on a bus, train, or plane can be more frustrating and costly (depending) rather than if you purchased it prior to arrival at the station/terminal.  Typically, lines at the station are out of control and you may be running late from work/school to get to your destination, so be sure to plan ahead!
  • Pack light:  This can be incredibly difficult sometimes depending on your trip, but the lighter you pack, the less you have to worry about excess luggage, your arm hurting from carrying the load, or lack of space on the plane/bus/train.
  • Bring snacks:  You never know what the weather is going to be like when you’re traveling and if it’s going to cause hefty delays.  Not much is worse than being delayed, waiting impatiently AND being hungry.  Like Snicker’s commercials say…”you’re not you when you’re hungry.” Bring snacks!
  • Bring something to do:  Whether it’s downloading a movie for your travels, listening to music, reading a book, catching up on work, or just simply taking a nap, having something to do will help pass the time.
  • Relax: Holidays are a time for loved ones, good food, and relaxing on the couch.  By this time, we’re nearing the end of the semester, right before final exam stress arrives so take this time for yourself, unwind, and spend time with good company.

Happy holidays!
