Getting Ready for FIT

Congratulations! The anxious waiting period of college acceptance is finally over, as you are getting ready to embark on a new chapter of your life as an FIT student. The high school to college transition may be daunting, but as long as you are prepared, you are GOLDEN. Although everyone’s experience departing to college may be different, here are some solid tips to ease your transition:

  1. College Prep 101 with Mom: As they always say, “mother knows best” and it couldn’t be truer! Mothers always have your best interest at heart and think of all the things that don’t always cross your mind, like taking your vitamins or buying a safe for your personal belongings (my mother’s idea.) Have a brainstorming session with your mother about what to pack, what to accomplish before sending you off and any mini-lessons on cleaning or laundry that might come in handy. She knows more than you think.
  2. Adulting: Time to set yourself up for success. Some major appointments to make the summer before school include setting up a bank account, doctor appointments (annual physical with vaccinations, dentist, eye-doctor etc.,) and obtaining an official state ID (If you don’t have your driver’s license.) Although these things are not the most fulfilling, part of being an adult is taking care of yourself.
  3. Dorming: Don’t wait until the last minute to pick up everything you need for your freshman dorm! Start checking off materials on your list one by one throughout your summer until you come to move in during August. That way, you will be planning ahead to alleviate stressful situations. My favorite spots are Home Goods, Marshalls/T.J. Maxx, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Christmas Tree Shops (If you are within the tri-state area.)

Good luck!
