New Semester Butterflies

The new semester can be TERRIFYING!  Regardless of what year or semester you are in, the start of something new is absolutely daunting.  As a junior entering my 5th semester this Monday, I am filled with anxiety.  The idea of starting over again with new professors, new coursework, and higher expectations isn’t something that I easily cope with.  The anticipation is the scariest part, I’ve come to realize.  Even though I’ve had this realization, the same way of nervousness hits me 2 times a year.  You may be wondering, “Why is she telling us this?”  I’m telling you to prove to you that you are not alone.  At 20 years old, an upperclassman, a commuter student, a junior, and a BFA student, I still get scared.  If you are a new student, perspective student, or transfer student, please know that you’re not the only one!

I find comfort in talking to others about what I’m going through.  Whether it’s calling my mom 10000 times a day or texting my friends to see how they’re doing, surrounding yourself with loved ones, even if it is over the phone, can help you find peace.  If you need to speak to someone professionally, the FIT Counseling Center is a great resource as well.   Discover your happy place, whether it is going to the gym, going out to eat, or watching Netflix on the couch.  Find a positive task that blocks the noise and nerves for the first few weeks of the semester.  Just remember that everyone is typically feeling what you are feeling.  You are never alone at FIT!
