I have another book for you all! It’s one of my most favored books, and after reading, I bet it will be on yours as well. It’s called Steal Like An Artist and is about the shared elements of the creative process.
It was suggested to me be one of my trusted mentors a few years ago and I find myself continuously referencing it. This is especially true now that I am embarking on my own new artistic endeavors.I am DJing my first show in 2.5 weeks, and I am feeling all of those feelings couched in between nervous and petrified. I also know the many, many artists here at FIT experiencing a similar journey and I want to share knowledge that can benefit us all.
What I enjoy about this book most is that different parts resonate with me depending on where I am in the process of my project. It’s great because it’s easy an easy read, has great graphics & can be easily carried around on the train. Here’s a few quotes that I’m connecting with in particular during my current artistic journey.
1. Don’t Wait Until You Know Who Are To Get Started:
…[imposter syndrome]. It means that you feel like a phony, like you’re winging it, that you really don’t really have any idea what you’re doing. Guess what: None of use do. Ask anybody doing truly creative work, and they’ll tell you the truth: They don’t know where the good stuff comes from. They just show up to do their thing. Every day.
2. Be Nice (The World Is A Small Place)
…So get comfortable with being misunderstood, disparaged, or ignored– the trick is to be busy doing your work to care.
