Notes From the 6 Train: Breaks & Breakthroughs

As I wait for my bus to take me from DC to New York it gives me plenty of time to review my past weeks at home. I had an amazing break and a few breakthroughs. I was able to spend time with my family and friends make some new friends, and create some art. While doing some meditating about what was missing from my life, I realized it was that I haven’t been creating like I used to. While in high school I volunteered at a public access television station. I learned how to create shot lists and storyboards, direct, edit and do post productions. Once I had done that for a while I was offered a job at the station and was able to teach other youth all I had learned. I absolutely loved it and I quickly learned that I at excelled at directing.  (Jaiah would probably blame it on my bossy Aries ways.) I got to direct and edit PSA’s, short films, documentaries and even a music video for a song made by youth from Usher’s NewLook summer camp. High school wore on and my interests shifted a bit, and due to the shrinking of public funds, the station was forced to cut the teen portion.

Since I stopped working at the station, I’ve missed film. This break, I re-evaluated what I really wanted and what made me happy. As a business major I don’t get to express my creative side as much as I need to maintain my sanity. I’ve realized that for too long, I have let several  excuses: lack of finances, time and official college courses in film,  hinder me from doing something I love.  This break I finally stopped making excuses, bought a camera and have already started working on some projects. What are you doing/ or not doing that you think would make you happier? Did you use your break from classes to accomplish something important?
